सात लड़कियों की कहानी
सात लड़कियां थीं। उनमें एक लड़की गरीब और बाकी छह धनवान घर से थीं। छह लड़कियों ने व्रत करने की ठानी और सातवीं लड़की को भी व्रत करने को कहा। सातवीं लड़की ने व्रत करने से मना कर दिया। तो सभी लड़कियां उसके घर गईं। उसकी मां से अपनी बेटी को व्रत करवाने के लिए कहने लगी।
माँ की चिंता
माँ ने कहा, “देखो बेटा, मेरे घर में खाने को कुछ नहीं है, मेरी बेटी व्रत कैसे करेगी?”
तब वे सारी सहेलियाँ बोलीं, “देखो माँ, एक-एक दिन ये हमारे घर खाना खाएगी, तो ही इसके व्रत पूर्ण हो जाएँगे। व्रत के लिए मना मत करो।” और वे सभी सहेलियाँ तभी मानीं जब माँ अपनी बेटी को व्रत करवाने को तैयार हो गई।
छओं लड़कियों का सातवीं लड़की के घर खाना खाने की जिद करना
बेटी एक-एक दिन सभी सहेलियों के घर खाना खाती। ऐसे करके छह दिन निकल गए। सातवें दिन सभी लड़कियाँ उसके पीछे पड़ गईं कि, कल हम सब तुम्हारे घर खाना खाएँगे। लड़की बोली, “मैंने पहले तुम्हें मना किया था।” पर लड़कियाँ मानी नहींं। तब सातवीं लड़की बाकी सभी लड़कियों को अपने घर खाना खिलाने को तैयार हुई। घर आकर वह अपनी माँ से बोली, “माँ कल सब लड़कियाँ अपने घर खाना खाने आएंगी।”
तब माँ ने कहा, “बेटी, मैंने तुझे पहले ही कहा था कि उन लड़कियों की बात मत सुन, अपने घर में खाने को है ही नहीं।” माँ को गुस्सा आया और वो अपनी लड़की को मारने लगी। लड़की रोती हुई जंगल में जाकर सो गई।
सातवीं लड़की का जंगल में शिव पार्वती से मिलना
उधर से ईसर (श्री शिव जी भगवान) पार्वती जी निकले। पार्वती जी ईसरजी से बोलीं, “देखो महादेव जी कोई तो अपनी शरण में आई है।” ईसरजी ने कहा, “दुनिया में बहुत लोग हैं, किस-किस को देखें?” पार्वती जी बोलीं, “नहीं ईसरजी इसको तो आपको पूछना ही पड़ेगा, इसको नहीं पूछोगे तो दुनिया में कौन पूछेगा?” ईसर-पार्वतीजी उस लड़की के पास आए।
पार्वती जी ने पूछा, “ब्राह्मण की बेटी, सो रही है या जाग रही है? किस चिंता में पड़ी है?”
लड़की बोली, “मेरे घर में खाने को नहीं है। मैंने गौर (गणगौर) के व्रत किए। छह दिन, छह लड़कियों के घर खाना खाने गई। अब छह लड़कियाँ मेरे घर खाना खाने आएंगी। मैं उनको क्या खिलाऊँगी ? इस चिंता में मैं पड़ी हूँ।”
ईसर पर्वतीजी की सातवीं लड़की पर कृपा
ईसर-पार्वती को उस पर दया आई ।
उन्होंने कहा, “जा, यहाँ के कंकड़, पत्थर, कैर (एक प्रकार की सब्जी) , सांगरिया (एक प्रकार की सब्जी) इकट्ठी कर ले। घर के चारों कोनों में थोड़े-थोड़े डाल देना। और थोड़े-थोड़े पालने में डाल देना।”
लड़की ने जितना उठा, उतना बटोर लिया, और घर ले चली। पार्वती जी ने उसकी टोकरी के हाथ लगा दिया। उसने घर पहुँच कर जैसा पार्वती जी ने कहा वैसा ही किया और सो गई। सवेरे माँ ने बेटी से पूछा, “लड़कियों को क्या खिलाएगी?”
बेटी कहने लगी, “माँ कमरा खोलकर देख लो।” माँ ने कमरा खोला तो चकित रह गई, वहाँ हीरे मोती जगमग कर रहे थे। माँ ने कहा, “बेटी ये सब कहाँ से लाई?” बेटी बोली, “माँ ईसर पार्वती ने मुझ पर कृपा की, भगवान मुझ पर प्रसन्न हुए हैं।” माँ उनमें से एक हीरा बाजार में लेकर गई। उसे बेचा और सारा सामान लाई, रसोई बनाई। सारी लड़कियाँ खाना खाने आईं और उन्होंने देखा कि उस लड़की के घर में बहुत ठाट-बाट है। छओं लड़कियों को सातवीं लड़की के घर पर बहुत मजा आने लगा। वे वहीं पर खाना खाकर खेलने लगी।
छह लड़कियों की माताओं का सातवीं लड़की के घर आना
शाम तक छह लड़कियाँ अपने-अपने घर नहीं गईं। अब उन लड़कियों की माताओं को चिंता हो गई। उन्होंने सोचा कि हमारी लड़कियाँ भूखी होंगी। तो वे थोड़ा-थोड़ा खाना लेकर सातवीं लड़की के यहाँ पहुँचीं। वहाँ जाकर उन्होंने देखा कि सभी लड़कियाँ आनंद से खेल रही हैं। सभी लड़कियों की माताएँ पूछने लगीं कि, तेरे घर में कल तक तो कुछ नहीं था। आज ये वैभव कहाँ से हो गया? तो लड़की ने कहा कि, मेरे ऊपर तो ईसर गौर जी प्रसन्न हुए हैं। और उसने सारी बात बता दी।
इर्ष्या और उसके दुष्परिणाम
ऐसा सुनकर उनमें से एक लड़की की माँ के मन में ईर्ष्या हुई। और वो भी अपनी बेटी से बोली, “तू भी जंगल में जाकर सो जा, ईसर-गणगौर अपने को भी धन देंगे।” बेटी ने मना किया पर उस लड़की की माँ नहीं मानी।
आखिर बेटी को जाना पड़ा। वो भी जंगल में जाकर सो गई। ईसर जी उसके सपने में आए और बोले, “बेटी तू सो रही है, या जाग रही है?” बेटी बोली कि मैं चिंता में हूँ। मैंने लड़कियों को अपने घर खाना खाने बुलाया है। पर मेरे घर में कुछ नहीं है। तो ईसर जी ने कहा, “सुबह उठकर बगीचे से कैर-सांगरिया ले जाना।”
वो उसी समय उठी। और जंगल के कैर सांगरिया ले जाकर माँ को दिये । माँ को कहा कि लड़कियाँ खाना खाने आएंगी। इन कैर सांगरियों को उबाल कर रख देना। लड़कियों को खाना खाने को बोला।
लड़कियाँ कहने लगीं, “तूने एक बार खाना खिला तो दिया अब क्या है?” वो मानी नहीं और सबको कह आई। माँ ने कैर सांगरियों को उबाल कर रख दिया। बेटी ने बर्तन का ढक्कन खोला तो डर गई। उसमें तो साँप, बिच्छू भरे पड़े थे। वो घबरा कर ब्राह्मण की लड़की के पास गई और बोली, “तुम्हारे घर में बहुत सारा धन हो गया। लेकिन मेरे घर में साँप, बिच्छू कैसे हो गए?”
ब्राह्मण की लड़की की माँ बोली, “भगवान भूखे पर कृपा करते हैं, जिसके पास सब कुछ है उस पर नहीं।” ब्राह्मण की लड़की की सहेली उसकी माँ के पैर पड़ गई। माँजी बोली, “मेरे पैर मत पकड़। ईसर गौरी के पैर पकड़।”
तब वो लड़की ईसर गौरी के पास गई। ईसर जी ने कहा कि तेरे धन में से आधा धन ब्राह्मण की बेटी को दे देवें, तो मैं ये माया समेटूँगा। वो घर गई। उसने अपना आधा धन ब्राह्मण की बेटी को दे दिया। फिर भी उसके घर में एक साँप रह गया। वो वापस ईसर जी के पास गई। ईसर जी बोले कि तेरे पास अब भी दो सुइयाँ बची हैं। उसमें से एक सुई ब्राह्मण की बेटी को दे दो तो बचा हुआ साँप भी खत्म हो जाएगा। उस लड़की ने ऐसा ही किया। ऐसा करने पर सभी जगह शांति हो गई।
हे पार्वती माता, जैसे आपने ब्राह्मण की बेटी पर कृपा करी वैसे सब पर प्रसन्न रहना। जैसे उसकी सहेली पर रूठे वैसे किसी पर मत रूठना।

The Story of Seven Girls
Once upon a time there were seven girls. One of them was poor, while the other six belonged to wealthy families. Six wealthy girls decided to observe a fast and invited the seventh girl to join them. The seventh girl refused. So, all the girls went to her house and asked her mother to make her daughter observe the fast.
Poor girl’s Mother’s Concern
The mother said, “Look, daughter, we don’t have anything to eat at home even for ourselves; how will my daughter observe the fast ?” Then all the friends said, “Look, mother, she will eat one day each at our houses and her fast will be complete. So please give her permission to do the fast.” All the friends insisted until the mother agreed to let her daughter observe the fast.
Six Girls Insisted to eat food at seventh girl’s house
The poor girl took food at each of her friends’ houses for six days. On the seventh day, all the girls insisted that now they will have food at her house the next day. The poor girl said, “I refused to all of you earlier that I will not do fast.” But the girls didn’t listened to her. Then the seventh girl agreed that the six girls can have food at her home the next day.
She went home and told her mother, “Mother, all the girls will come to our house tomorrow for the meal.” The mother said, “Daughter, I told you earlier not to listen to them; we don’t have anything to eat at our home.” The mother got angry and started beating her daughter.
The girl cried and went to sleep in the forest.
Seventh Girl met Lord Shiva and Parvati
Meanwhile, Isar (Lord Shiva) and Parvati ji were roaming in that jungle. Parvati ji said to Isar ji, “Look Mahadev, some girl has come seeking refuge.” Isar ji said, “There are many people in the world; whom should we look at?” Parvati ji said, “No, Mahadev, you must help her; if you don’t help her, who will?”
Isar ji and Parvati ji came to the girl. Parvati ji asked, “Brahmin’s daughter, are you asleep or awake? Why are you so tense ?” The girl said, “We don’t have anything to eat at home. I observed the Gauri (Ganagaur) fast. I took food at six friends’ houses for six days. Now, six girls will come to my house for the meal. What will I feed them? So I am worried.”
Lord Shiva and Parvati ji Blessed Seventh Girl
Isar ji and Parvati ji felt pity for her. They said, “Go, collect pebbles, stones, kair (a type of vegetable), and sangariya (a type of vegetable) from here. Put some quantity in each corner of your house, and a little in the cradle.”
The girl collected as much as she could carry and took it home. Parvati touched her basket. She reached home, and did as Parvati ji had said. Then she went to sleep. In the morning, the mother asked her daughter, “What will you feed the your friends today?” The daughter said, “Mother, open the room and see.”
The mother opened the room and was amazed; diamonds and pearls were glittering everywhere. The mother asked, “Daughter, from where did you get all this?” The daughter said, “Mother, Isar ji and Parvati ji blessed me; God is pleased with me.” The mother took one diamond to the market, sold it, bought groceries, and prepared the meal. All the girls came for the meal and saw that the girl’s house was now very luxurious and opulent. They enjoyed a lot at seventh girl’s home. They started playing there after taking food.
Six girls mothers went to seventh girl’s home
When the six girls didn’t went back home till evening, then their mothers got worried. They thought their daughters must be hungry. So, they took some food and went to the seventh girl’s house.
There, they saw that all the girls were playing happily. All the mothers asked the seventh girl, “Your house had nothing yesterday; from where did you got all this wealth today?” The girl said, “Isara and Parvati were pleased with me.” And she told them everything.
Envy, jealousy and its consequences
Hearing this, one girl’s mother became envious. She told her daughter, “You too should go to the forest and sleep; Isar and Parvati will give you wealth too.” The daughter refused, but the mother insisted. Finally, the daughter had to go and sleep in the forest.
Isar Ji appeared in her dream and said, “Daughter, are you asleep or awake?” The daughter said that she was worried. She had invited the girls for a meal, but she had nothing at home. Isar Ji said, “Get kair and sangariya (type of vegetables) from the forest in the morning.”
She woke up immediately. She got kair and sangariya from the forest and gave them to her mother. She told her mother that the girls would come for the meal and asked her to boil kair and sangariya. She called the girls to have food at her house. The girls said, “You already hosted us once; why you want to host us again?” But she insisted, and asked everyone to come to her home again for food.
The mother boiled the kair and sangariya. When the daughter opened the lid of the pot she was terrified. The pot was full of snakes and scorpions. She panicked and went to the Brahmin girl and said, “Your house got a lot of wealth, but mine is full of snakes and scorpions!”
The Brahmin girl’s mother said, “God blesses the hungry; not those who already have everything.” The Brahmin girl’s friend fell at her mother’s feet. The mother said, “Don’t fall to my feet; go and ask for mercy from Isar and Parvati’ ji.” So, the girl went to Isar and Parvati.
Isar ji said, “Give half of your wealth to the Brahmin girl, only then I will take away this illusion.” She went home and gave half her wealth to the Brahmin girl. Still, one snake remained in her house.
She went back to Isar ji. Isar ji said, “You still have two needles at your home. Give one needle to the Brahmin girl, and then the remaining snake will also disappear.” The girl did so. After doing this, peace returned to everyone.
Oh Parvati Mata, as you showered your grace upon the Brahmin girl, similarly remain pleased with everyone. Never get angry with anyone like you got angry with her friend.
Lessons Learned
- God’s grace is upon everyone, but more so on the hungry and needy.
- Envy and greed leads to bad consequences.
