देवरानी-जेठानी और दशा माता
एक घर में देवरानी-जेठानी थीं। उनके कोई संतान नहीं थी। वे मेहनत-मजदूरी करके अपना पेट पालती थीं। एक सवेरे वे गाँव में आग लेने गईं, परंतु किसी ने उन्हें आग नहीं दी क्योंकि उस दिन गाँव भर में दशा माता का पूजन था। उन्होंने सोचा कि अब क्या किया जाए? कोई आग देता ही नहीं। आखिर जेठानी बोली कि कोई बात नहीं। आज हम लोगों का भी व्रत ही सही।
दशा माता का व्रत
शाम को जब आग मिलेगी तब आग जलाकर भोजन पका लेंगे। संध्या समय जब जेठानी एक पड़ोसी के यहाँ आग लेने गई तो उसने पूछा कि, दशा माता का पूजन करने से क्या होता है? पड़ोसन ने जवाब दिया कि, जिस बात की इच्छा करके गंडे लिए जाते हैं, वह इच्छा पूर्ण होती है। तब जेठानी बोली कि बहन! अब की बार जब गंडे पड़ें तो मैं भी गंडा लूंगी। जेठानी आग लेकर पड़ोसन के घर से बाहर निकली तो उसे गायें दिखाई दीं। ग्वाला पीछे-पीछे आ रहा था। उसके कंधे पर एक बछड़ा था। और एक गाय उसे चाटती हुई उसके पीछे-पीछे आ रही थी। पड़ोसन ने पूछा- भैया! तुम्हारी गाय पहली बार ब्याई है या दूसरी-तीसरी बार? उसने कहा कि पहली बार। फिर उसने ग्वाले से पूछा कि बछड़ा है या बछड़ी है? ग्वाले ने कहा कि बछड़ा है।
तब पड़ोसन ने जेठानी से कहा कि, लो अब घर जाकर दशा माता का गंडा ले लो। नौ दिन तक कथा-कहानियाँ सुनना। दसवें दिन सिर से स्नान करके पूजन करना। दशा माता दस दिन के भीतर ही तुम्हारा मनोरथ पूर्ण करेगी। अपने घर जाकर जेठानी ने अपनी देवरानी को भी यह बात बताई। दोनों ने दशा माता के गंडे लिए और माता से प्रार्थना की, कि हमारे संतान पैदा हों, तो हम विधि-विधान से व्रत सम्पूर्ण करेंगी।
संतान और मनौती
दशा माता की कृपा से देवरानी-जेठानी दोनों ही गर्भवती हो गईं। नौ महीने नौ दिन के बाद दोनों के गर्भ से दो सुंदर बालक जन्मे। देवरानी ने कहा कि लड़के होने पर जो सुहागिनें न्यौतने की मनौती थी, उसको पूरा करना चाहिए। जेठानी ने कहा कि अभी ऐसी जल्दी क्या है। जब लड़के बड़े होंगे, उनकी सगाई होगी, उसी दिन सुहागिनें न्यौत देंगे।
लड़के बड़े हो गए। उनका सगाई-संबंध भी पक्का हो गया। फिर भी जेठानी ने सुहागिनें नहीं न्योतीं। उसने कहा कि जिस दिन लड़कों की भँवरे पड़ेंगी, उसी दिन सुहागिनें न्यौत देंगे। तब देवरानी बोली कि बहन! तुम जब चाहो तब करना, पर मैं तो मंडप के दिन ही सुहागिनें न्यौतुंगी। देवरानी ने जैसा कहा था, वैसा ही किया। उसने मंडप के दिन ही सुहागिनें न्योतीं, परंतु जेठानी ने कुछ भी परवाह नहीं की, बारात सजा-कर दोनों दूल्हे ब्याहने के लिए चले गए ।
दशा माता द्वारा जेठानी के बेटे का हरण
जिस लड़के की माता ने मंडप के दिन सुहागिनें न्योती थीं, उसका विवाह बड़ी धूमधाम से पूर्ण हो गया, परंतु जिसकी माता ने सुहागिनें नहीं न्योती थीं, उसको ठीक भवरों के समय दशा माता मंडप से हरकर ले गई। उस लड़के का नाम विवेक था। दूल्हे को एकदम गायब देखकर दोनों पक्षों में हाहाकार मच गया।
जिस लड़की से विवेक की शादी होने वाली थी उसका नाम सुधा था। लड़की की माता संकट में पड़ गई कि, अब उसकी लड़की का क्या होगा? पास-पड़ोस की चतुर स्त्रियों ने लड़की की माता को समझाया और ब्याह का जो सीधा-समान बचा हुआ था, उसे उसी लड़की सुधा के हवाले कर दिया। लड़की भिखारियों को सदाव्रत देने लगी।
साधू और इन्द्र सभा
एक दिन एक साधु तीर्थ यात्रा करता हुआ उसी गाँव की ओर आया। गाँव से बहुत दूर एक जंगल में एक बड़ा पीपल का पेड़ था। लोग उस पेड़ को पारस पीपल कहते थे। उसी पेड़ में दशा माता रहती थी। साधु शाम को उसी पेड़ के नीचे ठहर गया। वहाँ अंधेरा हो गया था। जब शाम का समय हुआ तो झाड़ू लगाने वाले ने उस पेड़ के पास मैदान में झाड़ू लगाई। फिर भिश्ती ने आकर जमीन पर पानी छिड़का। और माली ने आकर फूल बिखेर दिए। तब अनेक देवता, अनेक प्रकार की पोशाक पहने हुए, आ-आकर अपने-अपने स्थान पर बैठने लगे। सबसे पीछे राजा इंद्र का सिंहासन उतरा। उसी समय कई अप्सराएँ भी आसमान से उतरीं, और इंद्र के सिंहासन के सामने नाचने लगीं।
उसी समय दशा माता विवेक को गोद में लिए पीपल के पेड़ से उतरी। इंद्रदेव के साथ-साथ स्वर्ग से एक गाय भी आई थी। उस गाय ने दो कटोरी दूध दिया। विवेक ने एक कटोरा दूध पी लिया और एक कटोरा दूध अपनी पत्नी सुधा के लिए रख दिया। जब तक अप्सराओं का नाच होता रहा तब तक दशा माता विवेक को गोद में लिए बैठी रहीं। सवेरा होते-होते देवता वापस चले गए। साधु भी वहाँ से चलकर गाँव में आ गया।
साधू का सुधा से मिलना
वहीं साधु गाँव में भिक्षा माँगता-माँगता सुधा के घर आया। सुधा ने उसके लिए भोजन तैयार किया। साधु जब भोजन करने बैठा तब सुधा ने तीन पत्तलें परोसीं। एक को विवेक के नाम से अलग सरका दिया, एक साधु को दी और एक अपने सामने रखी। तीन पत्तलें देखकर साधु ने अपने आप से कहा। जो बात वहाँ देखने आई थी, वही बात यहाँ भी देखने में आ रही है। लड़की ने पूछा कि साधु बाबा आप क्या बात बोल रहे हैं? साधु ने बोला कि हम वैरागी लोग ऐसे ही अनेक बातें कहा करते हैं। तुम्हारा इन बातों से कोई मतलब नहीं है। तुम अपना भोजन करो।
सुधा हठ करने लगी फिर भी साधु बाबा चुप रहे। तब सुधा ने कहा कि आप साधु हैं तो मैं भी सती हूँ। आप या तो मुझे बात बताओ, या फिर मेरा श्राप लीजिये। तब साधु ने रात का सारा हाल, जो पीपल के पेड़ के नीचे हुआ था, उसे बता दिया।
सुधा का विवेक से मिलना
सुधा ने साधु बाबा के साथ पीपल के पेड़ के पास जाने का निश्चय किया। साधु बाबा आगे चले, सुधा उसके पीछे चली। साधु बाबा सुधा को पारस पीपल के पेड़ के पास छोड़कर चले गए। जब शाम हुई तो रोज़ की तरह झाड़ू वाला झाड़ू लगाने आया, भिश्ती ने पानी छिड़का और माली ने फूल बिखेरे। फिर देवता और राजा इंद्र आए और अप्सराओं का नाच-गाना होने लगा। उसी समय दशा माता पीपल के पेड़ पर से उतरकर इंद्र दरबार में बैठ गई। विवेक ने गाय से दूध लिया और उसने सुधा के लिए एक कटोरी दूध अलग रख दिया। जैसे ही विवेक ने अपना कटोरा मुँह से लगाया, वैसे ही सुधा अपना कटोरा हाथ में लेकर विवेक के सामने आ गई।
सुधा बोली कि मैं अपना भाग लेने के लिए आ गई हूँ, सेवा भी करूँगी। विवेक बोला कि मैं दशा माता की सेवा में रहता हूँ। अभी मुझे दरबार में जाकर उन्हीं की गोद में बैठना होगा। यदि तुम मुझ को चाहती हो, तो दशा माता को प्रसन्न करके, उनसे मुझको मांग लो। फिर विवेक जाकर दशा माता की गोद में बैठ गया। सुधा अप्सराओं के साथ नाचने लगी।
दशा माता द्वारा सुधा तो वरदान
जब सवेरा हुआ तब दशा माता ने कहा कि यह नई नाचने वाली लड़की बहुत अच्छा नाची है। दशा माता ने सुधा से कहा कि मैं तुमसे प्रसन्न हूँ। अपनी इच्छा का वर मांगो। सुधा ने दशा माता से वचन ले लिया कि जो मांगूंगी सो आपको देना पड़ेगा। फिर उसने तुरंत दौड़कर विवेक को पकड़ लिया और कहा कि मुझे यही चाहिए। दशा माता ने कहा कि तूने बहुत बड़ी चीज़ मांगी है। परंतु मैं वचन दे चुकी हूँ। इस कारण तेरा पति तुझे दे देती हूँ। राजा इंद्र ने दशा माता से पूछा कि, हे भगवती यह सब क्या भेद है ? ज़रा मुझे भी बताइए? तब दशा माता ने बताया कि यह लड़का विवेक मेरे ही वरदान से पैदा हुआ था। इसकी माता ने मनौती मांगी थी कि, जब लड़का पैदा होगा ,तब सुहागिनों का न्योता दूंगी। परंतु उसने आज तक अपना वचन पूरा नहीं किया। इसी कारण मैं अपने दिए हुए बालक को विवाह मंडप से ले कर आ गई।
यह लड़की वही स्त्री है जिसकी इस लड़के से शादी होने वाली थी। परंतु यह पतिव्रता है। इस कारण यह देव समाज में पहुँचकर मुझसे अपना पति छीनकर ले जा रही है।
देवताओं द्वारा पतिव्रता सुधा का स्वागत
दशा माता के ऐसे वचन सुनकर इंद्र एवं सभी देवताओं ने विवेक और सुधा के ऊपर फूल बरसाए। तब तक साधु बाबा भी वहाँ पर आ गए।
फिर साधु बाबा, विवेक, और सुधा तीनों गाँवों की ओर चले।
सुधा और विवेक का वापस अपने गाँव को लौटना
जब वे गाँव के नज़दीक पहुँचे तब लोगों ने सुधा के पिता को उनके आने के संबंध में खबर दी। जिस दिन से सुधा चली गई थी ,उस दिन से सुधा के पिताजी ने लज्जा के मारे घर से बाहर निकलना बंद कर दिया था। उन्होंने सोचा कि कहीं लोग मेरा उपहास तो नहीं कर रहे हैं। परंतु जब गाँव के प्रतिष्ठित लोगों ने भी उनसे यही बात कही, तब वे अपने घर से बाहर निकलकर आए।
जब उन्होंने सुधा को विवेक के साथ घर के दरवाजे पर खड़ा देखा तब उनकी प्रसन्नता का पार न रहा। सुधा ने अपनी माँ से कहा कि पहले विवेक के घर से सुहागिनों को न्यौत कर बारात यहाँ आनी चाहिए। सुधा के पिता ने विवेक के घर खबर भेजी। वहाँ सुहागिनों को न्योत कर बारात चली। बड़ी धूमधाम से विवाह हुआ। विवेक और सुधा दोनों अपने घर गए, तब फिर से विवेक की माता ने सुहागिनें न्योतीं।
हे दशा माता, जैसे आपने सुधा की दशा फेरी, वैसे ही इस कथा को सुनने और सुनाने वाले सभी का कल्याण करें।

Devrani, Jethani and Dasha Mata
Two sister-in-laws lived in a house. They had no children and earned their living through hard labor. One morning, they went to the village to collect fire, but nobody gave them any fire। The reason was that it was the day of Dasha Mata’s worship in the entire village. As per Dasha mata rituals nobody should give anything to anyone before completing puja. Sister-In-Laws wondered what to do, as no one was giving them fire. Finally, Jethani (Elder Sisten in Law) said, “It’s alright. We can also observe a fast today .”
The Fast of Dasha Mata
We will cook food when we get fire in the evening. In the evening, the Jethani went to a neighbor’s house to collect fire. she asked the neighbor about the benefits of worshipping Dasha Mata. The neighbor replied that, if you do fast for Dasha Mata and request her for fulfilment of your any desire, then Dasha Mata will fulfill that desire. Jethani request the neighbour that whenever she takes Dasha Mata Ganda next time , then she will also take Dasha Mata Ganda and do fast.
The Jethani (elder sister-in-law) was leaving the neighbor’s house with fire when she saw some cows. A cowherd was following behind, carrying a calf on his shoulder, and another cow was licking the calf and following him. The neighbour asked the cowherd, “Brother! Is your cow giving birth for the first time, or is it the second or third time?” He said it was the first time. Then she asked the cowherd if it was a male or female calf. The cowherd said it was a male.
Then the neighbor told the elder sister-in-law (Jethani), “This is a good time for starting Dasha Mata fast. Now go home and take the vow of Dasha Mata. Listen to stories for nine days and perform the puja after bathing on the tenth day. Dasha Mata will fulfill your desire within ten days.” Jethani went home and told about the fast to her Devrani (younger sister-in-law) . Both of them took the Ganda (sacred thread) of Dasha Mata and prayed to the Goddess to grant them children. They promised that they will complete the fast with all the rituals after they have a child.
Children and the Vow
Both sister-in-laws became pregnant. After nine months and nine days, both gave birth to two healthy sons. The Devrani (Younger Sister in Law) said to Jethani (Elder sister in law) that they should fulfill their vow of inviting married women to celebrate the birth of their sons.
The elder sister-in-law said, “What’s the hurry? When the boys grow up and their engagements are fixed, then we will invite the married women.”
The boys grew up, and their engagements were also fixed. Still, the elder sister-in-law did not invite married women. She said that they would invite them on the day of the boys’ weddings. Then the younger sister-in-law said, “Sister! You can do it whenever you want, but I will invite the married women on the day of the wedding itself.” The younger sister-in-law did as she said. She invited married women on the wedding day, but the elder sister-in-law did not bother. The wedding party procession was ready, and both the grooms went to get married.
Dasha Mata kidnapped the son of Jethani
The wedding of the boy whose mother (devrani, younger sister in law) had invited married women on the wedding day was celebrated with great fanfare. But at the time of the wedding rituals, Dasha Mata took away the other boy, Vivek who was the son of Jethani. Seeing the groom disappear suddenly, there was chaos among both families.
The name of the girl who was getting married to Vivek was ‘Sudha’. Sudha’s mother was distressed about her daughter’s future. The clever women from the neighborhood consoled Sudha’s mother. She advised Sudha’s mother to give away whatever goods and materials remained out of the wedding preparations to Sudha. Sudha started serving alms to beggars.
Sadhu and Indra’s court (Indra Sabha)
One day, a sage arrived in the village while on a pilgrimage. Far from the village, in a forest, there was a large peepal tree. People called it the “Paras Peepal.” Dasha Mata resided in that tree. The sage stayed under the tree in the evening.
In the evening, the sweeper swept the area near the tree. Then the water carrier sprinkled water on the ground, and the gardener scattered flowers. Then many gods, wearing various costumes, came and sat in their respective places. Behind everyone, the throne of King Indra descended. At the same time, many Apsaras also descended from the sky and started dancing in front of Indra’s throne.
At that moment, Dasha Mata came down from the peepal tree, carrying Vivek in her lap. Along with Indra, a cow had also come from heaven. The cow gave two bowls of milk. Vivek drank one bowl of milk and kept one for his wife, ‘Sudha’. Dasha Mata sat with Vivek in her lap while the Apsaras danced. By morning, the gods had left. The sage also left from there and went to the village.
The meeting of Sadhu with Sudha
The sage came to Sudha’s house while begging alms. Sudha prepared food for him. When the sage sat down to eat, Sudha served three plates. She pushed one aside for Vivek, gave one to the sage, and kept one in front of herself. Seeing the three plates, the sage said to himself, “The same thing that I saw last evening near peepal tree, I am seeing here too.”
The girl asked, “Sage, what are you saying?” The sage said, “We ascetics often say such things. It doesn’t concern you. Eat your food.” Sudha insisted, but the sage remained silent. Then Sudha said, “You are a sage, and I am a devoted wife. Either tell me what you said, or I will curse you.” Then the sage told her everything that had happened under the peepal tree that night.
The meeting of Sudha with Vivek
Sudha decided to go to the peepal tree with the sage. The sage went ahead, and Sudha followed. The sage left Sudha near the Paras Peepal tree and went away.
When evening came, as usual, the sweeper came to sweep, the water carrier sprinkled water, and the gardener scattered flowers. Then the gods and King Indra came, and the Apsaras started dancing and singing. At that time, Dasha Mata descended from the peepal tree and sat in Indra’s court. Vivek took milk from the cow and kept a bowl of milk aside for Sudha. As soon as Vivek put the bowl to his mouth, Sudha came before him with her bowl in her hand.
Sudha said, “I have come to claim my share and will also serve you.” Vivek said, “I am in the service of Dasha Mata. I must go to the court and sit in her lap. If you want me, please make Dasha Mata happy and ask for me from her.”
Then Vivek went and sat in Dasha Mata’s lap. Sudha started dancing with the Apsaras.
Dasha Mata gave boon to Sudha
When morning came, Dasha Mata said, “This new dancer has danced very well.” Dasha Mata told Sudha, “I am pleased with you. Ask for a boon.” Sudha asked Dasha Mata to promise that she would grant whatever she asked for.
Then Sudha immediately ran and grabbed Vivek and said, “I want him.” Dasha Mata said, “You have asked for a big thing, but I have given my word, so I will give you your husband.”
King Indra asked Dasha Mata, “O Goddess! Tell me, what is the mystery behind all this?” Then Dasha Mata explained that Vivek was born through her blessing. Vivek’s mother had made a vow to invite married women when her son was born, but she had not yet fulfilled her promise. Therefore, she had taken her son away from the wedding. This girl ‘Sudha’ is the woman whom Vivek was to marry.
Devtas showered flowers on Sudha and Vivek
Dasha Mata said that ‘Sudha’ is a devoted wife, therefore, she came to the divine assembly and is taking her husband from me.” Hearing Dasha Mata’s words, Indra and all the gods showered flowers on Vivek and Sudha.
Sudha and Vivek went back to their village
By then, the sage had also arrived back. Then the sage, Vivek, and Sudha went to their village. When they approached the village, the people informed Sudha’s father about their arrival. Since the day Sudha had left, her father had stopped going out of the house due to shame.
He thought that people may be joking with him, but when even the respected people of the village told him the same, he came out of his house. When he saw Sudha standing at the door with Vivek, he became very happy. Sudha told her mother that first, they should invite married women from Vivek’s house, and then the wedding party should come here. Sudha’s father sent a message to Vivek’s house. Married women were invited, and the wedding party proceeded. The wedding took place with great pomp.
Vivek and Sudha went to their house. Then Vivek’s mother invited married women as per the ritual she promised to Dasha Mata.
