एक कोमल रानी की कहानी
एक राजा की रानी बहुत ही कोमल थी। उसका नाम विध्या था। वह फूलों की सेज पर सोया करती थी। एक दिन उसकी सेज में एक फूल की कच्ची कली पड़ी रह गयी, जिससे रानी को नींद नहीं आयी। राजा ने पूछा कि आज तुमको नींद क्यों नहीं आ रही हैं? तब विध्या बोली कि आज सेज में एक फूल की कच्ची कली रह गई है, वही मेरे शरीर में चुभती है।
दीपक (दिया) की भविष्यवाणी
यह बात सुनकर पास में रखा हुआ दीपक हंसा। राजा ने दीपक से प्रार्थना की, कि हे दीपक देव! आप क्यों हंसे? दीपक ने उत्तर दिया कि, अभी तो रानी एक छोटी सी कच्ची कली के कारण परेशानी होती हैं। कल सवेरा होते ही जब सिर पर बोझा ढोएगी, तब इनका क्या होगा? राजा ने दीपक से पूछा, कि क्या मेरे जीते जी ऐसा हो सकता है? तब दीपक ने कहा की, हाँ ऐसा ही होगा।
राजा ने मन में सोचा कि देववाणी कभी असत्य नहीं हो सकती। विध्या को अवश्य ही कल बोझा ढोना पड़ेगा। अगर मैं इसको जीते जी समुद्र में बहा दूँ, तो यह बोझा ढोने से बच जाएगी।
राजा का उपाय और विध्या का भाग्य
राजा ने उसी समय विध्या से कहा, चलो हम तुमको तुम्हारे पीहर भेज देते हैं। विध्या तैयार हो गई। तब राजा ने उसे सन्दूक में बैठाकर नदी में बहा दिया। वह नदी समुद्र में ऐसी जगह जाकर मिलती थी, जहाँ राजा के बहनोई का राज्य था। समुद्र से मोती निकाले जाने का राजा का ठेका था। विध्या का संदूक बहता हुआ जब वहाँ पहुंचा, तो सन्दूक को देख कर राजा ने अपने मल्लाहों को हुक्म दिया कि, सन्दूक मेरे सोने के कमरे में रख दिया जाए। राजा के कमरे में संदूक पहुंचते ही, उस राज्य की रानी जिसका नाम देवांशि था , ने सुना कि, राजा को वह संदूक समुद्र में मिला है। तब देवांशि फौरन उस संदूक को देखने के लिए गयी। देवांशि ने संदूक खोला तो उसने संदूक के अंदर एक सुन्दर श्रृंगार किए हुए स्त्री को बैठे पाया।
देवांशि ने अपने मन में सोचा कि अगर राजा इसको इस दशा में देखेगा, तो इसी का हो जाएगा, और मुझ को त्याग देगा। इसलिए इस स्त्री का हुलिया बिगाड़ कर, इसे वापस संदूक में बंद कर देना चाहिए। तब देवांशि ने, विध्या के जेवर कपड़े सब उतार कर, तथा उसे मेले कुचैले, फटे पुराने कपड़े पहनाकर, सन्दूक को वापस बंद कर दिया। राजा जब महल में आया, तब उसने अपनी रानी से पूछा कि, क्या तुमने देखा की इस संदूक में क्या है? देवांशि ने मना कर दिया कि मैंने कुछ नहीं देखा। तब उस राज्य के राजा ने देवांशि के सामने संदूक खुलवाया। उसमें फटे पुराने कपड़े पहने हुए एक भिखारी सी स्त्री दिखाई पड़ी। तुरंत देवांशि बोली यह तो कोई भिखारी दिखाई देती है। इसको कारखाने में भिजवा दिया जाए। वहाँ लकड़ी ढोती रहेगी, और खाना पाती रहेगी। राजा ने रानी के कहे अनुसार उसे कारखाने में भेज दिया।
दशा माता का आशीर्वाद
एक दिन उस राज्य की रानी की सहेलियां, नदी में स्नान करके दशा माता के डोरे ले रही थी। एक डोरा अधिक था। वे विचार करने लगी की यह डोरा किसको दिया जाए? दैवयोग से उसी समय विध्या वहाँ जा पहुंची। उन्होंने विध्या से कहा कि, बहन यदि तुम कोई नीच वर्ण की नहीं हो तो, हमारा डोरा ले लो। विध्या ने कहा कि मुझे डोरा लेने में कोई आपत्ति नहीं है। परन्तु मुझे तो खाने भर को भी कुछ नहीं मिलता। इस डोरे की पूजा कैसे करूँगी। सहेलियां बोली की तुम इसकी चिंता मत करो, हम रोज़ इस जगह स्नान करने आया करेंगी। नौ दिन तक कथा कहानियाँ करेंगी। तुम भी रोज़ कथा सुन लिया करो। दसवे दिन पूजा होगी। तब अगर दशामाता चाहेगी,तो अवश्य तुम्हारी दशा बदल जाएगी। तब विध्या ने श्रद्धापूर्वक डोरा ले लिया।
उसी दिन विध्या के पति को यह चिंता सताने लगी की, रानी को संदूक में रख कर बहा तो दिया है। परन्तु आगे उसका क्या हुआ? इसका कोई समाचार नहीं मिला है। विध्या का पता लगाना चाहिए। तब राजा एक नौका पर सवार होकर नदी द्वारा यात्रा करता है। यात्रा करता हुआ वह अपने बहनोई के यहाँ पहुंचा। जब वह लेटने लगा, तब अपनी बहन देवांशि से बोला की मेरे हाथ पैर में बहुत दर्द है। किसी सेवक को बुला दो। तब देवांशि ने लकड़ी ढोने वाली दासी विध्या ,को बुलाकर हुक्म दिया कि, तू मेरे भाई के पैर दबा दे।
विध्या बड़े संकोच में पड़ गयी। वह यह काम करना नहीं चाहती थी। परंतु मजबूरन उसे स्वीकार करना पड़ा। राजा के पैर दबाते दबाते ,विध्या को उसके पांव का पदम् दिखाई पड़ा। विध्या चुपचाप रोने लगी। उसके आंसू राजा के पैरों पर गिर पड़े। तब राजा ने पूछा कि क्यों रे दासी तू क्यों रोती है?
तब वह बोली की जैसा पद्म चिन्ह आपके पैर में है, वैसा ही मेरे पति के पैर में था। पहले के दिनों को याद करके मुझे रोना आ गया। तब राजा बोला की मैं समझ गया। अब तुम पैर मत दबाओ और आराम से जाकर सो जाओ। जो तुम्हारे भाग्य में लिखा था, वह तुम को भोगना ही पड़ा। मैंने उसको टालने का उपाय रचा परंतु मेरा उपाय ही तुम्हारे भाग्य के लिखे को सच करने का माध्यम बन गया।
सवेरा हुआ परन्तु अतिथि राजा सोकर नहीं उठा और न ही दासी अपने कमरे से बाहर निकली। तब देवांशि को चिंता हुई। परन्तु थोड़ी देर बाद दासी बाहर निकल आई और कारखाने में काम करने चली गई। फिर देवांशि ने अपने भाई के पास जाकर उसे जगाया। तब वह बोला की मेरे सिर में बहुत दर्द है, मुझे ज्यादा मत सताओ। देवांशि ने पूछा कि आखिर बात क्या है? राजा ने कहा कि बड़ी लज्जा की बात है। मैंने तुम्हारी भाभी को जानबूझकर तुम्हारे पास भेजा कि, तुम इसे आराम से रखोगी परंतु तुम इससे मज़दूरों वाला काम करवाती हो। तब देवांशि बोली की भैया वह तो संदूक में बंद होकर आई थी। हमें क्या पता था कि वह हमारी भाभी है?
तुरंत देवांशि ने दासी को कहा कि, उस लकड़ी ढोने वाली दासी को बुलाकर ले आओ। जब विध्या आई तो देवांशि ने विध्या, जो की उसकी भाभी ही थी, से माफी मांगी। फिर राजा अपनी कोमल रानी को साथ लेकर राजधानी लौट आया। विध्या ने अपने महल में पहुँचकर, सुहागिनों को न्योता दिया, और धूमधाम से दशामाता के डोरे की पूजा की। पूरे नगर में सभी को संदेश दिया गया कि, आज से अमीर गरीब सब, दशामाता के डोरे लिया करें और श्रद्धा पूर्वक उनकी पूजा किया करें। हे दशामाता, जैसे आपने कोमल रानी के दुख के दिनो को, सुख में बदल दिया। वैसे ही अपने सब भक्तों पर कृपा करना, और सभी का कल्याण करना।

The Story of a Gentle Queen
A king’s queen was very gentle. Her name was Vidhya. She used to sleep on a bed of flowers. One day, there was a flower bud on her bed, which prevented her from sleeping. The king asked why she couldn’t sleep. The queen replied that a flower bud was pricking her.
The Lamp’s Prophecy
Hearing this, the lamp nearby laughed. The king pleaded with the lamp, asking why it laughed? The lamp replied that the queen was troubled by a small unopened bud; what would happen when she would have to carry loads on her head tomorrow morning and do labour work? The king asked if this could happen during his lifetime? The lamp said, “Yes, This will happen.”
The king thought that a divine prophecy could never be false. Vidhya would surely have to carry loads on her head tomorrow. To save Vidhya from carrying loads , I should cast her into the sea. Thus she would be spared from this labour work.
The King’s Plan and the Queen’s Fate
Immediately, the king told Vidhya, “Let’s send you to your parents’ home.” The queen agreed. The king then placed her in a chest and cast it into the river. This river flowed into the sea near the kingdom of the king’s brother-in-law. The king had a contract to collect pearls from the sea. When the chest reached there, the king’s brother-in-law, seeing the chest, ordered his sailors to place it in his treasure room. As soon as the chest arrived, the queen of that kingdom whose name was Devanshi, heard that the king had found a chest in the sea. She immediately went to see it. Devanshi opened the chest and found a beautifully adorned woman sitting inside.
Devanshi thought that if the king saw this lady, he would fall in love with this lady and abandon her. Therefore, she should spoil the woman’s appearance and lock her back in the chest. So, Devanshi removed the gentle queen’s (Vidhya) jewelry and clothes, dressed her in tattered and dirty garments, and locked the chest again.
When the king came to the palace, he asked his queen, if she had seen what was in the chest? Devanshi denied seeing anything. Then the king opened the chest in front of his queen. A woman dressed in tattered clothes like a beggar came out. Immediately devanshi said that she looked like a beggar. She should be sent to the factory to carry wood and get food.
The Blessing of Dasha Mata
One day, the queen Devanshi’s friends, after bathing in the river, were distributing Dasha Mata’s sacred threads. They had one extra thread and wondered to whom to give it. By chance, Vidhya arrived there. They asked her to accept the thread if she wasn’t of a lower caste. Vidhya said she had no objection to taking the thread, but she didn’t have enough to eat. How could she worship the thread? Devanshi friends said not to worry, they would bathe there every day, tell stories for nine days, and Vidhya can also listen to stories along with them. On the tenth day, there would be a puja, and if Dasha Mata wished, her condition would change.
Vidhya accepted the thread with full faith. That day, the gentle queen’s husband became anxious, as he had cast her into the chest, but had received no news about her. He decided to find her. He boarded a boat and travelled by river to his brother-in-law’s place.
When he was about to sleep, he told his sister that he is having pain in his hands and feet. Devanshi called the beggar woman (Vidhya) who carried wood and ordered her to massage the king’s feet. The gentle queen was hesitant but was forced to comply.
While massaging the king’s legs, she noticed the king’s feet had the same mark as her husband had. She wept silently, and her tears fell on the king’s feet. The king asked why she was crying. She said that the mark on his foot was the same the mark on her husband’s feet. So I remembering my past and I started weeping.
The king understood everything. He told her to stop massaging his legs and go and take rest. What was written in your destiny, you had to face it. The king told that he had tried to change the destiny of Vidhya , but his attempt only served to fulfill it.
Next morning came, but the guest king didn’t wake up, nor did the servant (Vidhya) left the room. Devanshi worried, but shortly afterwards, Vidhya went out to work at the factory.
Then Devanshi woke her brother. The king said that he had a severe headache. Devanshi asked what was wrong? The king said that you are my sister. I had intentionally sent my wife who is your sister-in-law to you. I expected you will treat her well, but you made her work like a laborer. Devanshi said that her sister-in-law had come in a locked chest; how could they know who she was?
Immediately, Devanshi asked to bring the wood-carrying servant Vidhya. When Vishya came, Devanshi apologized to her. Then the king returned to his capital with Vidhya. Vidhya invited married women to her palace and performed the puja of Dasha Mata’s thread.
A message was sent throughout the city that from now on, rich and poor alike should take Dasha Mata’s thread, and worship it with reverence.
Oh Dasha Mata, just as you changed the days of sorrow into joy for the gentle queen, bestow your grace on all your devotees and bring everyone’s well-being.
