राजकुमार और काछी पुत्र को चेचक की बीमारी
एक बार एक राजा के इकलौते पुत्र की शीतला (चेचक) निकली। राज्य में एक काछी पुत्र को भी शीतला निकली। काछी परिवार बहुत गरीब था। किन्तु माँ भगवती का उपासक था। वह धार्मिक दृष्टि से सभी नियमों का पालन करता था। प्रतिदिन नियमपूर्वक भगवती की पूजा होती थी। नमक खाने पर पाबंदी थी। सब्जी में छौंक नहीं लगता था। और न कोई वस्तु भूनी -तला जाती थी। गरम वस्तु न वह खाता था, न अपने बालक को ही खिलाता था। इस प्रकार काछी पुत्र शीघ्र ठीक हो गया।
राजा का प्रयास
उधर जब से राजा के लड़के को शीतला का प्रकोप हुआ था, तब से उसने भगवती के मण्डप में ‘शतचण्डी’ का पाठ शुरू करवा दिया था | रोज हवन व बलिदान होते थे | राजपुरोहित सदा भगवती के पूजन में मग्न रहते | राजमहल में रोज कड़ाही चढ़ती, विविध प्रकार के गर्म स्वादिष्ट भोजन बनते | इसका परिणाम यह होता कि उन लजीज भोजन की गंध से, राजकुमार का मन मचल उठता | वह भोजन के लिए ज़िद करता | एक तो राज पुत्र और दूसरा इकलौता, इस कारण उसकी अनुचित ज़िद भी पूरी कर दी जाती |
राजा के घर में इस प्रकार की दिनचर्या से शीतला का कोप घटने के बजाय बढ़ने लगा | शीतला के साथ-साथ राजा के लड़के के बड़े-बड़े फोड़े भी निकलने लगे, जिनमें खुजली व जलन अधिक होती थी | शीतला की शान्ति के लिए राजा जितने भी उपाय करता वह सब व्यर्थ हो जाते | एक दिन राजा के गुप्तचरों ने उसे बताया कि काछी-पुत्र को भी शीतला निकली थी, पर वह बिल्कुल ठीक हो गया है | यह जानकर राजा सोच में पड़ गया। कि मैं शीतला की इतनी सेवा कर रहा हूँ, पूजा व अनुष्ठान में कोई कमी नहीं है, पर मेरा पुत्र अधिक रोगी होता जा रहा है। जबकि काछी-पुत्र बिना सेवा-पूजा के ही ठीक हो गया |
देवी का दर्शन
इसी सोच में उसे नींद आ गई | श्वेत वस्त्र धारिणी माँ भगवती ने उसे स्वप्न में दर्शन देकर कहा। हे राजन् ! मैं तुम्हारी सेवा-अर्चना से प्रसन्न हूँ। इसलिए आज भी तुम्हारा पुत्र जीवित है | इसके ठीक न होने का कारण यह है कि, तुमने शीतला के समय, पालन करने योग्य नियमों का उल्लंघन किया है | जबकि ऐसे हाल में नमक का प्रयोग बन्द करना चाहिये | नमक से रोगी के फोड़ों में खुजली होती है |
घर की सब्जियों में छोंक नहीं लगाना चाहिये ,क्योंकि इसकी गंध से रोगी का मन उन वस्तुओं को खाने के लिए ललचाता है | रोगी को किसी के पास आना-जाना भी नहीं चाहिए। क्योंकि यह रोग दूसरों को भी होने का भय रहता है।
हे राजा, इस नियमों का पालन कर, तेरा पुत्र शीघ्र ही ठीक हो जाएगा। विधि समझाकर देवी अन्तर्ध्यान हो गई | प्रात: ही राजा ने देवी की आज्ञानुसार सभी कार्यों की व्यवस्था कर दी | इससे राजकुमार को सेहत पर अनुकूल प्रभाव पड़ा, और वह शीघ्र ठीक हो गया |

A Prince and Goddess Sheetala
Once upon a time, the only son of a king fell ill with smallpox (Sheetala). In the same kingdom, a poor potter’s son also contracted smallpox. The potter’s family was very poor, but the father was a devout follower of Goddess Sheetala. He religiously followed all the prescribed rules. He offered prayers daily, refrained from eating salt, avoided tempering vegetables, and no item was roasted or fried. He neither consumed hot food nor allowed his sick son to eat hot food. As a result, his son recovered quickly.
The King’s Efforts
Meanwhile, the king’s son also contracted smallpox (sheetla) . The king started the recitation of ‘Shatchandi’ in the temple of Goddess Sheetala. Daily havans (sacred fire rituals) and sacrifices were performed. The royal priests were constantly engaged in the worship of the goddess. Many varieties of food were cooked daily in the royal palace; the aroma of delicious hot food would reach the prince. This tempted him, and he would insist on eating those delicious food. Being the only royal son, his unreasonable demands were also fulfilled.
This routine in the king’s household, instead of reducing the severity of the smallpox, aggravated it. Along with smallpox, the prince developed large boils, causing intense itching and burning. All the measures taken by the king to appease Sheetala proved futile.
One day, the king’s spies informed him that the potter’s son, who had also suffered from smallpox, had completely recovered quickly. This made the king ponder: I am performing so much service, prayers and rituals for Sheetla mata, yet my son’s condition is worsening, while the potter’s son recovered without any special service or worship.
The Goddess’s Vision
Lost in thought, the king fell asleep. Suddenly, Goddess Sheetala appeared in his dream and said, “O King! I am pleased with your devotion. That’s why your son is still alive. The reason for his non-recovery from smallpox is that you have violated the rules to be followed during this illness.
Eating salt should be avoided because it increases itching in boils. Vegetables should not be tempered, as their aroma tempts the patient to eat. The patient should also avoid contact with others as the disease is contagious. O King, by following these rules, your son will recover quickly.” After explaining this, the Goddess disappeared. The next morning, the king made arrangements as per the Goddess’s instructions. This had a positive effect on the prince’s health, and he recovered quickly.
